Final Round Recap: LIV Golf Chicago

BOLINGBROOK, Ill. – Dean Burmester celebrated his clutch birdie putt Sunday on the first playoff hole that clinched the individual title at LIV Golf Chicago. He let out a flood of emotions at the 18th green that not only had been building during a tense final round but also due to challenges off the course.

A few minutes later, he had more reason to celebrate, as his Stinger GC teammates Branden Grace and Charl Schwartzel each birdied the 18th after terrific approach shots to win a team playoff against Torque GC, allowing the South African team to sweep both trophies at Bolingbrook Golf Club.

“The moment after the emotion of trying to win a golf tournament, there’s nothing sweeter than that,” Burmester said. “Then to have these two boys do it right behind me, all three of us birdie the playoff hole, is special.”

It was indeed a special day for Stinger GC, which ended a drought of 31 consecutive regular-season tournaments (33 if you count the Team Championships) without a victory. It was just the second double playoff in LIV Golf history and was also a call back to their trophy sweep in LIV Golf’s inaugural event in London in 2022, when Schwartzel won the individual title while the Stingers won the team trophy after sweeping the individual podium.

“The boys played well the whole week,” said Stinger Captain Louis Oosthuizen. “For [Burmester] to get that win, and then for Charl and Branden to hit those two shots into 18 was very special.”

Burmester won his second LIV Golf individual title by defeating Legion XIII Captain Jon Rahm and rising Fireballs GC star Josele Ballester after all three finished 9 under in regulation while playing together in the final group. Last year, he beat another Spaniard, Fireballs GC Captain Sergio Garcia, in a playoff in Miami.

It was a challenging day for Burmester, who entered the final round with a two-shot lead but promptly gave it away with three consecutive bogeys that brought in plenty of chasers. “Obviously had the dream start, didn’t I?” he joked. But he found his footing after that, producing three birdies and playing bogey-free golf the rest of the way to finish with an even-par 71.

Rahm and Ballester each shot 2-under 69 with birdies at the 18th in regulation to force the playoff. Burmester had a 23-foot birdie putt that could’ve avoided both playoffs had he made it, but he redeemed himself a few minutes later, producing a brilliant chip from the rough to set up his short birdie putt.

“Read it right to left and it went right to left and then went right and lipped in,” Burmester said of his putt. “I was halfway through a fist pump and then had to pause and have a second go at it.”

As for the emotions that came with his victory, Burmester explained, “I’ve been going through a bit of a rough time, personal stuff, and I’ve just been grinding and trying to get better … After three bogeys in a row to start, I was like, fudge, I don’t know where I’m going. The head was nowhere. But I just kept at it, and Jason, my caddie, was just phenomenal. He was just like, we never give up. We’re not going to give up. We’ve been through too much crap to give up.”

Although Rahm, seeking his first win of the season, was disappointed to lose the playoff, his strong finish did close the gap on Torque GC Captain Joaquin Niemann in the season-long Individual Championship race, which will now come down to those two players at next week’s LIV Golf Indianapolis.

Ballester, meanwhile, got his closest taste to a professional win in just his fifth LIV Golf start since joining the Fireballs this summer. It was an impressive effort from the 21-year-old from Spain, who did well to handle the pressure. “When you lose in a playoff to a birdie, there’s not much you can do,” he said.

The Stingers controlled the team leaderboard for a large portion of the day, but Torque closed fast, shooting a collective 9 under in the final six holes for each player. Mito Pereira, who is battling relegation, led the way with four birdies in his last five holes.

Both teams finished at 17 under, forcing the playoff that consists of two players from each team, with the aggregate best score winning. Torque Captain Joaquin Niemann selected himself and Carlos Ortiz for the playoff, while Oosthuizen opted for Grace and Schwartzel (with Burmester obviously playing in the individual playoff).

Oosthuizen and Grace each shot 67 while Schwartzel shot 72 in the final round. But Grace and Schwartzel finished higher on the final leaderboard. “I know Branden is playing very well and I know what kind of player Charl is,” Oosthuizen explained of his decision to sit himself. “It was actually in the end a very easy decision.”

It was made easier by the approach shots his Stinger teammates produced, with Grace hitting to 6 feet while Schwartzel found tap-in range. Meanwhile, Niemann and Ortiz had longer birdie chances; Ortiz rolled his in to force both South Africans to convert.

“It was just great to get up there, seeing Burmy getting over the line in the individual and giving us that extra bit of motivation to get it done,” Grace said, “and obviously the captain putting his faith in us to get it done as well.”

Sunday’s win was the first for the Stingers since Tulsa in 2023. Just like in Oklahoma, the South Africans rented a house together in Chicago this week. Obviously, the communal environment works for the South Africans.

“I think we’re already looking at houses for next week,” Oosthuizen said.

NIEMANN VS. RAHM FOR INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Torque GC Captain Joaquin Niemann will take a 12.27 points lead over Legion XIII Captain Jon Rahm into next week’s LIV Golf Indianapolis, the regular-season finale that will determine the season-long Individual Championship.

Niemann and Rahm are the only two players still with a mathematical chance to win the Individual Championship. Niemann has 208.43 points after his tie for 17th at LIV Golf Chicago, while Rahm has 196.16 points, closing the gap thanks to a tie for second after his playoff loss to Stinger GC’s Dean Burmester.

No other player can break into the top two in points. Crushers GC Captain Bryson DeChambeau (140.74 points) will try to hold on to third place, the final bonus-paying position. The only players with a mathematical chance to catch DeChambeau are Burmester, Smash GC’s Talor Gooch and 4Aces GC’s Patrick Reed.

The Niemann vs. Rahm duel is reminiscent of last year’s regular-season finale, when the two players battled for the season-long crown in Chicago. Rahm won both the tournament and the championship.

For Rahm to have any chance of overtaking Niemann in Indianapolis, he would need to finish in at least seventh place. Niemann can clinch the title with at least a second-place finish, no matter if Rahm wins the tournament.

LOCK ZONE MOVES: Two 4Aces GC players, Harold Varner III and Thomas Pieters, made big moves into the top 24 Lock Zone. Varner tied for fifth at 7 under after shooting a final-round 6-under 65, the lowest round on Sunday. He moved from 26th to 18th in the standings. Pieters shot a 67 to tie for 10th at 5 under. He moved from 27th to 20th in the standings.

Falling out of the Lock Zone were Legion XIII’s Tyrrell Hatton (23rd to 25th) and 4Aces Captain Dustin Johnson (24th to 28th).

Cleeks GC’s Richard Bland, trying to finish in the Lock Zone for the fourth consecutive year, moved to 26th after his tie for 10th.

RELEGATION UPDATE: Wild Card player Chieh-Po Lee moved out of the Drop Zone (49th and below in points) with a tie for 13th. Lee, who earned his playing privileges this season by winning last year’s LIV Golf Promotions event, is now 45th in points.

Torque GC’s Mito Pereira also made a move, also tying for 13th, his best result in his last 19 starts dating back to last year. Pereira moved from 53rd to 49th in points but will need another points finish in Chicago to avoid relegation.

He made four birdies in his last five holes, including three straight to end his round, to help Torque force a playoff against Stinger GC for the team title.

“I’ve been playing really good the last couple weeks, just nothing like the score hasn’t been showing,” Pereira said. “But today on the last couple holes, I had some good birdies and finished better.”

HyFlyers GC’s Andy Ogletree fell into the Drop Zone, from 48th to 50th, with a tie for 34th.

16TH SWEEP: The sweep of both the team and individual trophies by Stinger GC is the 16th time in 45 regular-season LIV Golf tournaments.

It’s the second time the Stingers have swept; they did it in LIV Golf’s inaugural event in London in 2022 when Charl Schwartzel won the individual title.

The sweep in Chicago is the fourth time this season. Sergio Garcia and Fireballs GC won both trophies in Hong Kong; Marc Leishman and Ripper GC won the titles in Miami; and Bryson DeChambeau and Crushers GC won both trophies in Korea.

5 DIFFERENT TEAM WINNERS: Stinger GC becomes just the fifth different team to win a tournament this season. Legion XIII has won four, Crushers GC and Fireballs GC have won three each, and Ripper GC has won once.

PLAYOFFS: The individual playoff Sunday was the 12th individual playoff in LIV Golf history, while the team playoff was the third. Stinger GC lost the first team playoff last year in Adelaide to Ripper GC. Meanwhile, Dean Burmester is now 2-0 in individual playoffs.

AK MATCHES BEST ROUND: Wild card player Anthony Kim shot a final-round 5-under 66, which matches his lowest round – relative to par – since his return to competitive golf last season after a 12-1/2 year absence. Kim shot 68-66 in the final two rounds at Chicago after an opening 82 to tie for 44th at 3 over.
