Final Round Recap: LIV Golf Chicago

BOLINGBROOK, Ill. – Dean Burmester celebrated his clutch birdie putt Sunday on the first playoff hole that clinched the individual title at LIV Golf Chicago. He let out a flood of emotions at the 18th green that not only had been building during a tense final round but also due to challenges off the course.

A few minutes later, he had more reason to celebrate, as his Stinger GC teammates Branden Grace and Charl Schwartzel each birdied the 18th after terrific approach shots to win a team playoff against Torque GC, allowing the South African team to sweep both trophies at Bolingbrook Golf Club.

“The moment after the emotion of trying to win a golf tournament, there’s nothing sweeter than that,” Burmester said. “Then to have these two boys do it right behind me, all three of us birdie the playoff hole, is special.”

It was indeed a special day for Stinger GC, which ended a drought of 31 consecutive regular-season tournaments (33 if you count the Team Championships) without a victory. It was just the second double playoff in LIV Golf history and was also a call back to their trophy sweep in LIV Golf’s inaugural event in London in 2022, when Schwartzel won the individual title while the Stingers won the team trophy after sweeping the individual podium.

“The boys played well the whole week,” said Stinger Captain Louis Oosthuizen. “For [Burmester] to get that win, and then for Charl and Branden to hit those two shots into 18 was very special.”

Burmester won his second LIV Golf individual title by defeating Legion XIII Captain Jon Rahm and rising Fireballs GC star Josele Ballester after all three finished 9 under in regulation while playing together in the final group. Last year, he beat another Spaniard, Fireballs GC Captain Sergio Garcia, in a playoff in Miami.

It was a challenging day for Burmester, who entered the final round with a two-shot lead but promptly gave it away with three consecutive bogeys that brought in plenty of chasers. “Obviously had the dream start, didn’t I?” he joked. But he found his footing after that, producing three birdies and playing bogey-free golf the rest of the way to finish with an even-par 71.

Rahm and Ballester each shot 2-under 69 with birdies at the 18th in regulation to force the playoff. Burmester had a 23-foot birdie putt that could’ve avoided both playoffs had he made it, but he redeemed himself a few minutes later, producing a brilliant chip from the rough to set up his short birdie putt.

“Read it right to left and it went right to left and then went right and lipped in,” Burmester said of his putt. “I was halfway through a fist pump and then had to pause and have a second go at it.”

As for the emotions that came with his victory, Burmester explained, “I’ve been going through a bit of a rough time, personal stuff, and I’ve just been grinding and trying to get better … After three bogeys in a row to start, I was like, fudge, I don’t know where I’m going. The head was nowhere. But I just kept at it, and Jason, my caddie, was just phenomenal. He was just like, we never give up. We’re not going to give up. We’ve been through too much crap to give up.”

Although Rahm, seeking his first win of the season, was disappointed to lose the playoff, his strong finish did close the gap on Torque GC Captain Joaquin Niemann in the season-long Individual Championship race, which will now come down to those two players at next week’s LIV Golf Indianapolis.

Ballester, meanwhile, got his closest taste to a professional win in just his fifth LIV Golf start since joining the Fireballs this summer. It was an impressive effort from the 21-year-old from Spain, who did well to handle the pressure. “When you lose in a playoff to a birdie, there’s not much you can do,” he said.

The Stingers controlled the team leaderboard for a large portion of the day, but Torque closed fast, shooting a collective 9 under in the final six holes for each player. Mito Pereira, who is battling relegation, led the way with four birdies in his last five holes.

Both teams finished at 17 under, forcing the playoff that consists of two players from each team, with the aggregate best score winning. Torque Captain Joaquin Niemann selected himself and Carlos Ortiz for the playoff, while Oosthuizen opted for Grace and Schwartzel (with Burmester obviously playing in the individual playoff).

Oosthuizen and Grace each shot 67 while Schwartzel shot 72 in the final round. But Grace and Schwartzel finished higher on the final leaderboard. “I know Branden is playing very well and I know what kind of player Charl is,” Oosthuizen explained of his decision to sit himself. “It was actually in the end a very easy decision.”

It was made easier by the approach shots his Stinger teammates produced, with Grace hitting to 6 feet while Schwartzel found tap-in range. Meanwhile, Niemann and Ortiz had longer birdie chances; Ortiz rolled his in to force both South Africans to convert.

“It was just great to get up there, seeing Burmy getting over the line in the individual and giving us that extra bit of motivation to get it done,” Grace said, “and obviously the captain putting his faith in us to get it done as well.”

Sunday’s win was the first for the Stingers since Tulsa in 2023. Just like in Oklahoma, the South Africans rented a house together in Chicago this week. Obviously, the communal environment works for the South Africans.

“I think we’re already looking at houses for next week,” Oosthuizen said.

ROUND 3 NOTES
 
NIEMANN VS. RAHM FOR INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Torque GC Captain Joaquin Niemann will take a 12.27 points lead over Legion XIII Captain Jon Rahm into next week’s LIV Golf Indianapolis, the regular-season finale that will determine the season-long Individual Championship.

Niemann and Rahm are the only two players still with a mathematical chance to win the Individual Championship. Niemann has 208.43 points after his tie for 17th at LIV Golf Chicago, while Rahm has 196.16 points, closing the gap thanks to a tie for second after his playoff loss to Stinger GC’s Dean Burmester.

No other player can break into the top two in points. Crushers GC Captain Bryson DeChambeau (140.74 points) will try to hold on to third place, the final bonus-paying position. The only players with a mathematical chance to catch DeChambeau are Burmester, Smash GC’s Talor Gooch and 4Aces GC’s Patrick Reed.

The Niemann vs. Rahm duel is reminiscent of last year’s regular-season finale, when the two players battled for the season-long crown in Chicago. Rahm won both the tournament and the championship.

For Rahm to have any chance of overtaking Niemann in Indianapolis, he would need to finish in at least seventh place. Niemann can clinch the title with at least a second-place finish, no matter if Rahm wins the tournament.

LOCK ZONE MOVES: Two 4Aces GC players, Harold Varner III and Thomas Pieters, made big moves into the top 24 Lock Zone. Varner tied for fifth at 7 under after shooting a final-round 6-under 65, the lowest round on Sunday. He moved from 26th to 18th in the standings. Pieters shot a 67 to tie for 10th at 5 under. He moved from 27th to 20th in the standings.

Falling out of the Lock Zone were Legion XIII’s Tyrrell Hatton (23rd to 25th) and 4Aces Captain Dustin Johnson (24th to 28th).

Cleeks GC’s Richard Bland, trying to finish in the Lock Zone for the fourth consecutive year, moved to 26th after his tie for 10th.

RELEGATION UPDATE: Wild Card player Chieh-Po Lee moved out of the Drop Zone (49th and below in points) with a tie for 13th. Lee, who earned his playing privileges this season by winning last year’s LIV Golf Promotions event, is now 45th in points.

Torque GC’s Mito Pereira also made a move, also tying for 13th, his best result in his last 19 starts dating back to last year. Pereira moved from 53rd to 49th in points but will need another points finish in Chicago to avoid relegation.

He made four birdies in his last five holes, including three straight to end his round, to help Torque force a playoff against Stinger GC for the team title.

“I’ve been playing really good the last couple weeks, just nothing like the score hasn’t been showing,” Pereira said. “But today on the last couple holes, I had some good birdies and finished better.”

HyFlyers GC’s Andy Ogletree fell into the Drop Zone, from 48th to 50th, with a tie for 34th.

16TH SWEEP: The sweep of both the team and individual trophies by Stinger GC is the 16th time in 45 regular-season LIV Golf tournaments.

It’s the second time the Stingers have swept; they did it in LIV Golf’s inaugural event in London in 2022 when Charl Schwartzel won the individual title.

The sweep in Chicago is the fourth time this season. Sergio Garcia and Fireballs GC won both trophies in Hong Kong; Marc Leishman and Ripper GC won the titles in Miami; and Bryson DeChambeau and Crushers GC won both trophies in Korea.

5 DIFFERENT TEAM WINNERS: Stinger GC becomes just the fifth different team to win a tournament this season. Legion XIII has won four, Crushers GC and Fireballs GC have won three each, and Ripper GC has won once.

PLAYOFFS: The individual playoff Sunday was the 12th individual playoff in LIV Golf history, while the team playoff was the third. Stinger GC lost the first team playoff last year in Adelaide to Ripper GC. Meanwhile, Dean Burmester is now 2-0 in individual playoffs.

AK MATCHES BEST ROUND: Wild card player Anthony Kim shot a final-round 5-under 66, which matches his lowest round – relative to par – since his return to competitive golf last season after a 12-1/2 year absence. Kim shot 68-66 in the final two rounds at Chicago after an opening 82 to tie for 44th at 3 over.

Following the final round of LIV Golf Chicago, Stinger GC addressed the media after securing a sweep of both the team title and an individual win by Dean Burmester. En el U.S. Women’s Amateur, la batalla final por el título se definió entre dos estadunidenses, Megha Ganne y Brooke Biermann. La primera resultó la ganadora, por amplio margen de 4-arriba y tres hoyos a jugar. No fue un dominio aplastante, pero sí muy claro a lo largo de todo el partido. Biermann nunca estuvo arriba en el marcador y solamente en seis hoyos de los 33 que duró el match por el título, estuvo empatado. A partir del hoyo 12 Ganne tomó la delantera y ya nunca regresó hacia atrás. Nunca fue presionada seriamente y solamente debió cuidar no caer en los obstáculos brutales que tiene la fantástica cancha de Bandon Dunes, en Oregon. Cabe decir que Bandon Dunes es una cancha tipo «links» auténtica. Tan poderosamente ha llamado la atención, que la USGA ya la ha seleccionada para otros torneos en el futuro. Además, los fuertes vientos que soplan en este lado de la costa del Pacífico, siempre presentan un reto formidable.

Adicionalmente, cabe destacar la notable participación de dos nacionales, Lauren Olivares y Alexis Yanet Lamadrid. Ambas calificaron a match-play de manera holgada, Olivares con score de 5-bajo par y Lamadrid con 4-bajo par.
Ya en la fase de match-play, Lauren Olivares ganó su primer match, pero fue eliminada en la ronda de 32. Alexis Yanet, por su parte, fue eliminada en su primer partido.

Con respecto a la campeona Megha Ganne, esta reconoció que la perseverancia fue un factor decisivo en esta conquista. Fue su séptima presentación en el torneo y recordó cómo llegó a semifinales en 2019, cuando contaba con 15 años solamente. Fue eliminada en semifinales por la suizo-mexicana, Albane Valenzuela, quien perdió en la final en aquel año. En esta su séptima presentación, Megha Ganne es campeona finalmente, a los 21 años.
La campeona de 2024, Rianne Malixi, fue la medalista en esta ocasión, pero rápidamente fue eliminada en la fase de 64 en match-play.

En el DP World Tour, el escocés Grant Forrest soportó la carga de sus oponentes en la recta final del NEXO Championship y con un discreto recorrido final de 72 golpes, par de campo, capturó la victoria en la cancha de Trump International Golf Links, en Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Sin duda, la cancha fue protagonista, en virtud de ser una auténtica cancha «links» y que ofreció retos en verdad monumentales. El score de 8-bajo par es fiel reflejo de los adversidades y las peculiaridades de esta cancha, perteneciente al emporio inmobiliario de Donald Trump.

Al haber arrancado con una buena ventaja, Forrest se dedicó a manejarse dentro de la cancha, evitando caer en graves problemas, sin hacer nada espectacular, pero ejecutando golpes muy sólidos y precisos. Así, navegó sin complicaciones y se llevó el trofeo de campeón. Sumó 280 golpes, ocho-bajo par, aventajando por cuatro golpes al británico Joe Dean, quien cerró con 71 golpes y acumulado de 284 golpes, cuatro-bajo par. El tercer lugar fue compartido entre tres jugadores, Kristoffer Reitan (74), Jacob Skov Olesen (72) y John Parry (70), cada uno con score de 285 golpes, tres-bajo par.

El zurdo Olesen, quien en 2024 conquistara el British Amateur, parecía que estaba mejor posicionado para dar la pelea hasta el final, pero se desplomó con errores hacia la recta final, que le impidieron disputar el título al escocés Forrest. Para este último, este fue su segundo éxito en el DP World Tour, en virtud de que había debutado como ganador en el Hero Open en 2021. Cuenta con 32 años de edad y con este resonante triunfo, se espera ascienda del puesto 113 al 28 en el Race to Dubai, la carrera anual en el DP World Tour.

En el torneo de LIV Golf, el sudafricano Dean Burmester se llevó la tarde con su sensacional victoria en playoff, superando a dos jugadores hispanos, el veterano Jon Rahm y el joven Josele Ballester, que a punto estuvo de estrenarse como campeón en el torneo de Chicago. Vaya final del torneo en donde las dificultades del campo jugaron un rol preponderante, hecho que fue reflejado en los altos scores. Burmester sumó parciales de 68-65-71 para score de 9-bajo par. El nuevo campeón comenzó erráticamente, con tres bogeys, pero poco a poco fue corrigiendo el rumbo y anotó tres birdies, el último en el 16. Así, igualó con Rahm (69) y Ballester (69), quienes empataron en el liderato en 9-bajo par.

Los tres finalistas fueron al desempate y en el mismísimo primer hoyo extra, el 18, Burmester definió el torneo a su favor con decisivo birdie. De golpe y porrazo, los dos españoles fueron eliminados y debieron conformarse con compartir el segundo sitio. En el cuarto lugar terminó el encendido Carlos Ortiz, quien luego de haber arrancado con 72 golpes, siguió con 65 y 68 para score de 8-bajo par. Le siguieron Harold Varner, Branden Grace y Paul Casey, cada uno en 7-bajo par, empatados en el quinto puesto.
Para José Luis Ballester fue un torneo de revelación, ya que todavía no cumple un año de haberse convertido en profesional; el campeón del U.S. Amateur en 2014, sin duda demostró que tiene los tamaños para competir con jugadores de esta jerarquía.

En cuanto al torneo por equipos, Burmester empujó a los Stinger para ganar, con lo que él se llevó el doblete. Así, los sudafricanos conquistaron el título con score de 17-bajo par, en donde también fue definido en playoff, contra los Torque, de Joaquín Niemann. El tercer lugar fue para 4Aces, de Dustin Johnson, con score de 15-bajo par. Los Fireballs también sumaron 15-bajo par. Abraham Ancer, en el lugar 17, con score de 2-bajo par.

1985 – Scott Verplank vence en muerte súbita a Jim Thorpe y conquista el Western Open en Butler National, aun como aficionado. Verplank derrotó a Thorpe con par en el segundo hoyo extra. Fue la primera victoria en el PGA Tour de un amateur desde que Doug Sanders conquistara el Canadian Open, en 1956. Desde aquel triunfo de Verplank, solamente Phil Mickelson lo ha logrado, en 1991 en Tucson.

1922 – Nace Frank Stranahan en Toledo, Ohio. Estudió en Miami, Harvard y Pennsylvania. Destacada carrera como amateur, conquistó el British Amateur en 1948 y 1950 y fue finalista en el U.S. Amateur en 1950. Logró infinidad de campeonatos amateur, incluyendo el Nacional de Aficionados de México en 1951. Ganó seis torneos del PGA Tour, tres de ellos como amateur, en virtud de que se hizo profesional a los 32 años. Su victoria más relevante fue el Los Angeles Open en 1958. Stranahan fue un serio aficionado al físico-culturismo. Falleció en 2013 a los 90 años, en Florida.

1986 – Nace Paula Creamer en Mountain View, California. Una aventajada jugadora amatuer, conquistó 11 torneos de la American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). Profesional desde 2004, ganó el Sybase Classic en 2005, con lo que se convirtió en la segunda jugadora más joven en ganar un torneo oficial. 1995 – Dottie Mochrie obtiene título en el McCall’s LPGA Classic at Stratton Mountain

 

CUMPLEAÑOS

 

1904 – Nace Harry Cooper en Leatherhead, England. Muy joven su familia emigró a Texas en donde su padre consiguió un trabajo como profesional de club en Dallas. Harry fue apodado “Lighthorse” debido a la velocidad con que jugaba. Acumuló 31 títulos en el PGA Tour e ingresó al World Golf Hall of Fame en 1992. Terminó segundo dos veces en el Masters y dos veces en el U.S. Open.

1966 – Nace Billy Mayfair en Phoenix, Arizona. Ganador de cinco torneos en el PGA Tour, incluyendo el Tour Championship en 1995. Estudió en Arizona State y se hizo profesional en 1988. Ha sido el único jugador que ha derrotado a Tiger Woods en un desempate en el PGA Tour, en el Los Angeles Open en 1998. Como amateur, logró dos torneos mayores, el U.S. Amateur en 1987 y el U.S. Amateur Public Links en 1986.

 

Agosto 07

1954 – P.B. “Laddie Lucas”, un veterano de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, piloto de la RAF y excelente golfista zurdo, juega completamente ciego la cancha de Sandy Lodge en Hertfordshire y registra un score de 87, 15-sobre par. “Laddie Lucas” además, fue Capitán del equipo de Gran Bretaña & Irlanda en la Walker Cup en 1947 y 1949.

1960 – Wiffi Smith obtiene la victoria en el LPGA Waterloo Open
1976 – Chako Higuchi conquista el LPGA Colgate-European Open
1983 – Hal Sutton logra vencer al legendario Jack Nicklaus en la edición 65 del PGA Championship, con total de 274 golpes, diez-bajo par. El campeonato fue jugado en la monumental cancha de Riviera C.C., en Los Angeles, California.

1983 – Patti Rizzo vence en el LPGA Boston Five Classic
1988 – Martha Nause captura el Planters Pat Bradley International Tournament
1994 – Carolyn Hill es la campeona del McCall’s LPGA Classic at Stratton Mountain

1950 – Babe Didrikson-Zaharias domina en el All-American Golf Open
1965 – Marlene Hagge es campeona del Milwaukee Golf Open
1971 – Jane Blalock conquista el Lady Pepsi Golf Open
1982 – Sandra Palmer vence en el Boston Five Golf Classic

1982 – Ray Floyd logra conquistar su segundo PGA Championship, en Southern Hills, Oklahoma. Floyd ganó de punta-a-punta con rondas de 63-69-68-72 para 272 golpes. Fue su tercer campeonato mayor, de cuatro que logró obtener en su carrera.
1988 – 9° US Senior Open: Gary Player se queda con el título

1991 – Un espectador muere por un rayo durante la primera ronda del PGA Championship, que se disputó en Crooked Stick, Indiana. Este fue el segundo suceso trágico en el año, luego de que una persona murió por descarga de rayo en el U.S. Open de aquel año, en Hazeltine, Minnesota.
1993 – Dana Lofland es ganadora del McCall’s Classic Dormann en Stratton Mt.

1923 – Se constituye la New York State Golf Association
1953 – Lew Worsham emboca la pelota desde 135 yardas con un wedge, para águila en el par-4 del hoyo 18, que le dio una dramática victoria por un golpe sobre Chandler Harper en el evento inaugural del Tam O’Shanter World Championship of Golf, el primer torneo que fue televisado en Estados Unidos. Este torneo fue el primero que tuvo US $100,000 de bolsa, de los cuales, US $25,000 fueron para Worsham, el ganador.

1964 – Shirley Englehorn captura el Waterloo Women’s Open Invitational
1970 – Jane Blalock se impone en el Lady Carling Golf Open
1975 – Donna Caponi Young gana título en el Colgate European Ladies Open
1981 – Hollis Stacy se corona en el LPGA West Virginia Bank Classic

1981 – Larry Nelson conquista la edición 63 del PGA Championship, con total de 273 golpes en Atlanta Athletic Club. Fue su primer torneo mayor, de tres que lograría en su carrera profesional.
1987 – Mary Beth se queda con la victoria en el Henredon Classic

1987 – Larry Nelson se queda con su segundo PGA Championship, con score de 287 en la cancha de PGA National. Fue la edición número 69 de este clásico, habiendo derrotado en muerte súbita a Lanny Wadkins.
1992 – Florence Descampe domina en el McCall’s Classic en Stratton Mt.

1952 – Louise Suggs captura título del All-American Women Tournament
1958 – Mary Lena Faulk es vencedora del Macktown Open
1968 – Shirley Englehorn se corona en el Concord Open
1969 – Marlene Hagge es campeona del Stroh’s-WBLY Open
1974 – Judy Rankin se impone en el Colgate-European American Open
1975 – Jack Nicklaus es invencible en la edición 57 del PGA Championship, que se disputó en Firestone C.C., en Akron, Ohio. Fue el cuarto PGA en la ilustre carrera del “Oso Dorado”.

1980 – 8° du Maurier Golf Classic: Pat Bradley supera a sus oponentes

1980 – Quinto PGA Championship para Jack Nicklaus, en la cancha de Oak Hill, en New York. Nicklaus disparó 274 golpes para superar a Andy Bean.
1986 – Betsy King obtiene la victoria en el LPGA Henredon Classic
1997 – Edición 36 de la Walker Cup. Estados Unidos se impone por 18 a 6

1997 – Deb Richard conquista el LPGA Friendly’s Classic

1997 – Northville Long Island Senior  Classic, Jericho, NY: Dana Quigley gana título
1997 – Vijay Singh, de Fiji, se corona en el Buick Open en Warwick Hills, Mich.

2008 – Padraig Harrington gana la edición 90 del PGA Championship, con total de 277 golpes en la cancha de Oakland Hills.

2014 – Rory McIlroy, con 268 golpes, supera por uno a Phil Mickelson y conquista su segundo PGA Championship, en Valhalla, Kentucky

CUMPLEAÑOS

1960 – Nace Kenny Perry en Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Estudió en Western Kentucky y se hizo profesional en 1982. Un consistente ganador, acumuló 14 títulos en el PGA Tour. Aun sin un torneo mayor, perdió en dos ocasiones en muerte súbita: en el PGA de 1996, ante Mark Brooks y en el Masters de 2009, en muerte súbita frente a Angel Cabrera. En el Champions Tour tiene ocho conquistas hasta la fecha, incluyendo tres torneos mayores, el Senior Players Championship, el Regions Tradition y el U.S. Senior Open. Ha formado parte de dos equipos de Copa Ryder (2004, 2008) y de cuatro equipos de Presidents Cup (1996, 2003, 2005 y 2009).
